Mahmoud Abdelrahman at Manchester Metropolitan University is a driver on the Tusker car benefit scheme. Hear how his colleague gave him a lift in his Tusker Mercedes EV which changed Mahmoud’s whole perception on EV’s, read on to see if he converted to an EV or not…
Manchester Metropolitan University have been a customer of Tusker since 2019 where they launched their car salary sacrifice scheme to their employees. Mahmoud joined the University in 2022 and quickly found out about the Tusker car benefit scheme.. One of his colleagues was raving to Mahmoud about the scheme, how he has his own brand-new Mercedes electric car, he expressed “it’s such a good opportunity, you should give it a try.” Mahmoud had hesitations on the amount of money that would be taken from his salary and hadn’t considered an EV previously, but when his colleague gave him a lift, his whole perspective on this changed.
After experiencing his colleague’s EV, Mahmoud started thinking about making the switch to an EV long term. He initially had some considerations, “I travel 1000 miles per month with commuting for work, but my biggest comparison to Tusker was how much I paid for my 2011 car with insurance, servicing, etc. The Tusker car scheme would cost me around £60 more than I paid at that time, but it’s so much more worth it with a brand new car, everything’s included, so there’s no hassle!” Mahmoud can also add his wife onto his scheme and he expressed it’s “good value for money” when he saw the reflection in his salary with the tax decreases.
Mahmoud explored all the different cars that were on offer to him on the Tusker website, he had no experience with EV’s so this was a new world for him. After weighing up his options, he ordered the VW ID.5 on the Tusker website as it had a 4-week delivery time, he said it was a “really easy application process.” After he ordered his car, the Volvo C40 caught his eye, he “really liked the colours and the reviews but I was scared about changing my mind, so I called the customer service team to help me decide.”
The Tusker customer service team supported Mahmoud over the phone with his concerns on whether to change to the Volvo C40 or not, and they really put his mind at ease. Mahmoud decided to change his order to the Volvo C40, where the team organised delivery to his home address with a charger as well.
Mahmoud chose a 3 year deal with Tusker and him and his wife are really enjoying the car. “I was initially scared to drive the car as there’s no sound or anything, but since we got it we’re so happy. It’s really good, my family and I really like it! We know that if there’s a problem, Tusker will sort it out which makes us feel extra safe.”
Mahmoud is really impressed with his EV charging, he only needs to charge once a week and can charge overnight at home, at his work, and he also found some local charges that are free fast-charging from 20-90% in 20 minutes. “It’s brilliant!”
As a first time EV driver, anxiety about the range is natural for some people.. Mahmoud was apprehensive on long journeys, but now he’s travelled to Liverpool, Lancaster and London from Manchester; “The dashboard keeps me up to date and finds me the nearest chargepoint when we need to recharge. There are loads of charge points available, we only had to charge once on the way and once back as a top-up. It’s funny, my Volvo tells me it’s time for a coffee so I know when to stop and charge it!”
We asked Mahmoud how his experience has been with his new EV and Tusker; “Everything’s been great! I love the experience, love the car, I think EV’s are brilliant. When you analyse it over the long term with comparing costs including fuel, breakdown, MOT, tyres, maintenance, everything is sorted! Tusker come to my house to change my tyres for me, everything has been so easy. Also, with my 3 year deal, tech is only going to improve so to know I can change my car to something new then is great!”
