Customer Stories: Bruntwood

1. Introduction

Leanne Mullen, Culture and Engagement Manager at Bruntwood wasn’t originally looking for a car benefit scheme, but tells us about how it might be the best decision she’s made. Tusker work with a number of leading benefit providers, including Mercer Marsh who work with Bruntwood. Mercer Marsh promoted Tusker to Leanne during a routine call, making her aware of the benefits of the scheme and that there were no costs involved in implementing the car scheme as part of their array of benefits. Leanne then attended a Good Employment Charter event, where members also highlighted the benefits of the Tusker car scheme and its impact on employee engagement. Leanne felt compelled to review the scheme and see what it could offer Bruntwood.

2. Choosing Tusker

Given the budgets had been set some time before, it was important to Bruntwood that there wasn’t any cost to the business to launch the scheme. With employees navigating the cost of living crisis, Leanne thought “this could really help people.”

Bruntwood pledged that all areas under their direct control – so, offices, communal areas of buildings, and their entire vehicle fleet – will operate at net zero carbon by 2030. Launching Tusker really supports these goals. Leanne explains, “We’re looking to do everything we can to be NetZero so anything I can do to help the company meet these targets, then absolutely, let’s look into it.”

Leanne arranged an introduction call with Tusker to find out more about the scheme and she exclaimed, “I was just like, WOW! You’re such a big, reputational, established company and you really had your stuff together. You made everything really simple. The implementation team hold your hand through it all. I thought, do you know what, this is a no brainer. It’s such a quick win for us as a business to improve engagement, the financial wellbeing of our people, and their mental wellbeing. And knowing they’re driving around in a brand new car is a great attraction and retention tool because obviously people will be more inclined to stay with this benefit. I wrote a paper and sent it to the board and it was approved, so here we are.”

3. Implementation

The implementation process took around three months, which was standard for a benefits implementation, but Leanne was keen to highlight that “if it was down to Tusker, that would’ve been done in 4 weeks – it just took a while for us to organise time with our legal team.”

Leanne had a really positive experience with our implementation team and was pleased to explain to us how the process has gone for her; “I’ve never known an implementation like it for anything I’ve worked on in all my experience of rolling out new HR systems, payroll systems, intranet systems and other new benefits. It was brilliant. I filled in some feedback about it at the time, it was really, really, good.”

4. Fitting with existing benefits

Off the back of joining the Tusker car benefit scheme, Bruntwood is also looking at an electric bike hire scheme to compliment it further. They’ve already got a cycle to work scheme that they’ve had for a number of years which is quite popular.

They’re huge advocates for sustainable travel, they also have a travel to work loan for an annual public transport pass where their employees pay for it monthly but benefit from the annual price. Leanne expresses that “We support our regions’ public transport infrastructures and we are big ambassadors of sustainable travel. Anything we can do for sustainable travel, we’re all over!”

5. ‘Our employees were really excited’

Leanne expressed that they made a lot of noise around the scheme before they even launched it. She said “our colleagues were really excited – if I had a pound for every time that I was asked when the scheme was launching, I could’ve bought a Tesla outright by now! They were so excited, I’m surprised that the site didn’t crash when we went live.” Leanne also said that the feedback she’s had from people is that they’ve been on the site, had a good look, they think they know what they want to, but want to ensure they’re making the right choice. She continues, “We’ve had a number of orders and have had a lot of engagement, so I’m really happy with how it’s going.”

From the company’s point of view, there’s been an extremely positive response. Their old process would be to ask one person in the company all of the queries regarding quotes, mileage, adding a partner, special added features etc, and they would liaise with the hire company. Tusker is completely self-serve and Leanne expressed that “it’s been really peaceful because everyone just logs on, looks for themselves and speaks to Tuskers employee engagement team. It’s taken all the pain away from us to administer, which is great.” Bruntwood no longer has a full time person managing the fleet so this was another compelling reason to launch the scheme.
