Which electric BMW is right for you?

Choosing an electric BMW isn’t simply about finding the one with the biggest range or the fastest charging speed. It’s about finding the car that fits into your life.

Do you spend most of your week commuting and navigating busy car parks? Do you need enough room for children, shopping and weekends away? Or are longer motorway journeys a regular part of your routine?

That’s where the BMW iX1, iX2 and new iX3 start to feel quite different.

All three are fully electric, all seat five and all give you the raised driving position of an SUV. But look a little closer and each one has its own strengths.

So rather than getting lost in the specifications, here’s how to find the electric BMW that fits the way you drive.

BMW iX1: for drivers who want an electric SUV that fits easily into everyday life

If you want the practicality of an SUV without driving something that feels unnecessarily big, the iX1 is a good place to start.

Rear seats folded in BMW iX1 demonstrating flexible space in the car At 4.5 metres long, it’s the smallest of these three BMWs. That makes it a useful size for the everyday stuff – commuting, squeezing into supermarket spaces, navigating town and getting everyone where they need to be.

But being the smallest doesn’t mean it’s short on practicality.

There are five seats and 490 litres of luggage space with the rear seats in place, increasing to as much as 1,495 litres when you fold them down. So, there’s plenty of flexibility when the weekly shop turns into a weekend away.

Inside, BMW’s Curved Display brings together the driver display and central touchscreen, while the higher seating position gives you that SUV feel without moving into a much larger car.

And then there’s range.

Depending on the version, the iX1 can offer up to 320 miles of WLTP range. When you do need to stop, DC charging at up to 130kW can take the battery from 10–80% in around 29 minutes.

That combination’s really where the iX1 makes sense. It’s compact enough to be easy to live with during the week, while still having the space and range to deal with longer journeys when they crop up. And for drivers considering the switch to electric, selected iX1 variants also qualify for the full £3,750 government Electric Car Grant, making them an even more appealing option.

Think iX1 if: you want a practical electric BMW SUV that feels at home on the commute, school run and weekend away.

BMW iX2: for drivers who want the practicality of the iX1, with a sportier edge

The iX1 and iX2 have plenty in common underneath, but you probably won’t struggle to tell them apart.

The iX2 swaps the more traditional SUV shape for a lower, coupé-inspired roofline. It’s a little longer than the iX1 too, giving it a noticeably different profile.

And choosing the sportier shape doesn’t mean it stops your daily routine.

There’s room for five and 525 litres of luggage space with the rear seats in use, so you’ve still got plenty of space for shopping, luggage and everything else that tends to find its way into the boot.

Range is similar to the iX1, with up to 319 miles available depending on the version. You’ll also find the same maximum 130kW DC charging capability, with a 10–80% charge taking around 29 minutes.

If you go for the xDrive30, there’s another side to the iX2 as well. All-wheel drive and 313hp can take it from 0–62mph in 5.6 seconds.

Of course, it’s not a performance you need for every day, but it’s most certainly a want for drivers looking for a punchier drive and that stronger road presence.

It’s less about choosing between style or practicality and more about getting a bit of both. Selected iX2 variants also qualify for the full £3,750 government Electric Car Grant, adding another reason to consider the model if you’re looking to make the move to electric.

Think iX2 if: you like the everyday usability of the iX1 but want your electric BMW to have a sportier, more distinctive look.

BMW iX3: for drivers who don’t want range to limit their plans and adventures.

This is where things take a big jump.

The new iX3 isn’t simply the next size up from the iX1 and iX2. It’s the first BMW from the brand’s new Neue Klasse generation, bringing with it a new approach to batteries, charging, technology and interior design.

And one number immediately stands out: 500 miles.

That’s the maximum WLTP range available across the iX range, depending on the model and specification.

For drivers regularly covering longer distances, this could be a game changer. Fewer charging stops to think about means more flexibility when the working week includes motorway journeys, client visits or longer trips away.

But arguably the bigger change happens when you do need to stop.

The new iX3 uses an 800-volt electrical system and can support DC charging at up to 400kW. BMW says the iX3 50 xDrive can add up to 231 miles of WLTP range in around 10 minutes when connected to a suitable charger. A 10–80% charge can take around 21 minutes.

So rather than simply giving you more miles between stops, the iX3 is designed to make the stops themselves shorter too.

There’s plenty happening inside the iX3 too

One of the biggest upgrades is the BMW Panoramic iDrive.

Instead of relying solely on a traditional dashboard display, information’s now projected across a wide section at the bottom of the windscreen, putting all your useful, everyday apps and info within the driver’s natural field of view.

The central touchscreen is angled towards the driver too, while an available 3D Head-Up Display can bring navigation and driver assistance information even closer to your line of sight.

Then there are the practical bits you’ll probably notice more often.

There’s plenty of room for five. Fold the rear seats and you’ll get access to as much as 1,750 litres of luggage space. There’s also additional storage under the bonnet – handy for keeping charging cables separate from whatever you’ve packed into the boot.

That’s really where the iX3 starts to make sense.

It isn’t simply the BMW to choose because it has the biggest range figure. It’s the one for drivers who want more room, regularly travel further and want BMW’s newest electric technology working around them.

Think iX3 if: you regularly cover longer distances so really need that extra range, and you want more room for family life.

So, which electric BMW fits your life?

That’s really the question to ask.

  • Mostly commuting and everyday family driving? Start with the iX1.
  • Want similar everyday usability but prefer something sportier? Take a closer look at the iX2.
  • Regularly covering longer distances or want more space? The new iX3 could make more sense.
  • Want BMW’s newest EV technology and fastest charging? That’s where the iX3 really stands apart.

Still stuck between the iX1 and iX2? They’re quite closely matched when it comes to range and charging, so this may come down to which shape, specification and personalised monthly amount works better for you.

And if you’re comparing either of them with the iX3, think about how often you’ll genuinely benefit from the extra range, space and much faster charging.

The specifications can help you create the shortlist. But it’s how the car fits into your day-to-day that should make the final decision.

And what about Benefit in Kind?

There’s good news here too.

The BMW iX1, iX2 and iX3 are all fully electric and produce zero tailpipe emissions. Fully electric cars continue to benefit from a 4% Benefit in Kind rate for the 2026/27 tax year.

And with a Tusker salary sacrifice car, your monthly amount includes more than the car itself. Servicing, maintenance, replacement tyres, roadside assistance and insurance are all taken care of too, helping to make budgeting for your car that bit simpler.
