Tusker’s Six Steps to Accident Management

Accidents happen, no matter how cautious you are in your own car. Tusker’s here to support you, so if you’re ever involved in a crash, don’t worry; we’re here to help.

Tusker’s Six Steps to Accident Management

1. Make sure you’re safe: First and foremost, if you’ve had an accident turn on your hazard lights immediately. This ensures other people can see you and makes the accident obvious to other drivers. Once your hazard lights are on, check that everyone’s safe and get out of the car if it’s safe to do so – particularly on motorways and make sure you stand far behind the barriers or wherever seems safest dependant on your location and position

2. Inspect for damage: If it’s safe to do so, check your car for any damage, regardless of the size of the accident, and make sure you get the involved parties’ names and addresses, including any witnesses to the incident, as well as the drivers insurer’s names and addresses. We’d always advise avoiding admitting fault. Even casual comments can be taken as you admitting liability, so be mindful of your words, even if you’re feeling shaken.

Please ask any third parties involved to ring our insurers (Intact Insurance on 0330 1000 565) first, they will manage the accident for everyone involved.

3. Collect Evidence: If you can, take detailed photos of the damage to all vehicles involved. This is very helpful for our insurers and can have a significant impact on any claim you might have. If you’re injured, ask someone to take your photos for you. Law firms suggest documenting the following:

      • Any injuries to yourself or passengers
      • Damage to property
      • Traffic signs in the area that might affect the case
      • Key witnesses or police officers present
      • Make, model and registration number of all cars involved

Accidents can cause shock, affecting your memory. Having photographic evidence will be beneficial in the long run.

4. Set Up a Warning Triangle: If it’s safe to do so, retrieve the warning triangle from the Tusker driver pack, usually located in your car’s boot. Place it on the road at a visible distance from your vehicle. The Highway Code recommends placing it on the same side of the road, at least 45 meters (147 feet) behind your car. Do not use the warning triangle on motorways.

5. Contact Emergency Services: If necessary, call the emergency services and ensure everyone stays in place until they arrive. On motorways, ensure everyone gets out of the vehicle on the side away from traffic and stays safe, ideally behind a barrier. Keep pets in the car unless they’re in danger. When making any phone calls, face the traffic.

6. Call the Tusker Accident Management Team: Finally, contact the Tusker Accident Management Team or complete the online incident report by scanning the QR code on your driver and bump card pack in your car. We’ll take care of you and your vehicle from this point forward.
