Pre-Loved EVs: What’s Really Happening with Battery Health?

There’s been a lot of chat over the years about EV batteries – especially when it comes to running a pre-loved electric car. Do they lose range quickly? Will the battery suddenly drop off a cliff after a few years?

Good news: the latest (and largest) UK study of used EV batteries tells a very reassuring story.

So, what did the research find?

Thousands of used electric vehicles were analysed to get a clear picture of real-world battery health – and the results are encouraging.

On average, pre-owned EVs are still sitting at around 95% of their original battery capacity.

Let that sink in for a moment.

That means most pre-loved EVs on the road today have barely scratched the surface of their usable battery life.

Even vehicles that are 8–9 years old are typically showing battery health in the mid-80% range – comfortably above the levels covered by most manufacturer warranties.

Mileage myths… busted

One of the most interesting findings? Mileage alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

We often think in traditional petrol or diesel terms – higher mileage equals more wear and tear. But with EVs, it’s not quite that simple. Some higher-mileage cars still show very strong battery health, while a low-mileage car isn’t automatically “better.”

Battery degradation tends to be gradual and predictable, not sudden or dramatic.

Why this matters for Tusker drivers

For anyone considering a pre-loved EV – whether part of a salary sacrifice scheme or not, this is great reassurance.

It shows that:

  • Modern EV batteries are built to last
  • Range loss over time is typically modest
  • Pre-driven EVs can still offer excellent performance and value

In simple terms: EVs aren’t just good when they’re new – they hold up well over time too.

The bigger picture

The perception that EV batteries “don’t last” is becoming increasingly outdated. Real-world data now paints a very different picture: pre-loved electric vehicles remain reliable, capable and efficient years down the line.

And that’s good news for sustainability, affordability, and peace of mind.

If you’re exploring your next car and wondering whether a pre-owned EV stacks up – the evidence suggests it absolutely does.
