Polestar made a dramatic statement at its inception with the Polestar 1, a distinctive plug-in hybrid super coupe with minimalist styling. This car’s clean lines proved eye-catching while the combination of its electric motors and combustion engine yielded a mighty 592bhp, but running on electricity alone the car could cover up to 93 miles.
As impressive as the Polestar 1 was, the bigger challenge for Polestar was to go mainstream. The Polestar 2 is an all-electric saloon that retains the crisp styling and purity of design that has become a Polestar hallmark, but in the more practical saloon form of a Tesla Model 3 rival. Its stance is almost sculptural, a shape that oozes sophistication, while gaining everyday practicality.
Seating five, the Polestar 2 interior is sharply designed, and beautifully built, trimmed with vegan-friendly surfaces or optional leather depending upon your preferences. A durable space is forged from high-quality materials, and while it sticks true to its brand DNA by being minimalist in nature, a larger portrait touchscreen infotainment display dominates the cabin. Compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, this large tablet-like screen features many of the apps you’ll be familiar with on your phone. It also absorbs much of the switchgear to deliver occupants a distinctly Swedish simplicity.
The Polestar 2 is a pleasingly practical choice with plenty of legroom for those in the rear and good levels of storage for all the bits which come with family life. Unlike a traditional saloon, this car has a large hatchback opening, which is handy for loading bulky items into the 405-litre boot.
Originally launched in 2019, the Polestar 2 received a mid-life update that significantly enhanced the technology found beneath the bodywork. Single-motor variants of the car are now rear-wheel drive to enable more dynamic driving, while improved batteries and battery tech have boosted the overall range. The Standard Range single motor car has a very reasonable range of up to 321 miles, while the Long Range variant provides up to an impressive 394 miles. An all-wheel drive Long Range Dual Motor car, ideal for those living where weather conditions can be changeable, offers 367 miles. Both Long Range vehicles can charge from 10-80% in just 28 minutes via a rapid 205kW charge.
“The Standard Range single motor car has a range of up to 321 miles.”
All Polestar 2 models are respectably brisk with even the entry-level cars achieving 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds. However, if you go for the Long Range Dual Motor with the Performance Pack, you’ll have 469bhp at your disposal and the ability to achieve 0-60mph in four seconds flat. Additionally, larger brakes are fitted to tame the car’s pace and keen drivers also get the ability to finely tune the suspension response, thanks to adjustable Öhlins dampers.
Polestar might be a young company, but it has already made a big impact within the world of EVs and is set to further with the launch of the Polestar 3 and 4 coming soon.
