Louise Walker, Associate Professor in Midwifery at University of Nottingham, shares her experience with her second fully-electric, Tusker car on the car benefit scheme.
The University of Nottingham launched their car scheme with Tusker in 2021. At the time, Tusker held some information sessions to share details and benefits of the scheme, which Louise Walker went along to. Louise was so impressed with the Tusker scheme that she decided to place an order for a new car.
Originally Louise chose the Hyundai IONIQ 4 and was so impressed with the car and the way the scheme worked for her, that she has recently renewed with Tusker and now has an IONIQ 6. Louise was keen to switch to an electric car in 2021, and its been the right decision for her as she’s continuing with EVs “to be conscious of not using any other kinds of fuels.” The Tusker car scheme allows Louise to have an opportunity of going electric without the big outlay of buying an electric car, which can be really expensive. “The Tusker scheme has allowed me to try them to see if it works for me, and it does! It works for the commutes I do and I haven’t had to visit a petrol station in 5 years.”
Tusker provides a wide range of vehicles and loads of choice to suit what works best for you. After having the IONIQ 4 (193 mile range), Louise was looking for something with more range and further charging efficiency, but sticking with the Hyundai as she really liked her previous car. The IONIQ 6 was a perfect match; “I can go 343 miles on a single charge, it’s a very clever car, it’s got a lot of features and when you look across the market, I’d have to pay an awful lot more for it, if it was another make.”
Louise previously would avoid long commutes and choose to travel by train because she would have to stop and charge on the way, “not that it was a problem as it’s only needed now and again, it’s about planning in a different way.” She now has more freedom to take the longer journeys without having to stop as many times, if at all.
The Tusker website provides drivers with a view of all the cars there are available to them, including stock cars, browse cars (configure your own vehicle) and Pre-loved cars. Louise used the Tusker website to browse the different vehicles she was looking for to find the perfect EV and range for her, she found it easy to use. “You just go and look at all the cars that are on offer and pick which one sits best for you.”
Louise has a charger at the side of her house which she predominantly uses to charge her EV. If needed, Louise will charge on longer commutes, with more chargers popping up around the country as the infrastructure improves.
Louise is happy with scheme because, “it’s enabled me to have an electric car, now my second full electric car. I wouldn’t have been able to afford the car I have through Tusker if I went out to buy it. It’s allowed me to see what they’re like and try the EVs without any overheads.”
We asked Louise if she’d recommend the Tusker scheme to friends, family and her colleagues at the University; “Yes, it enables you to have a very nice car, with the back up that your insurance, servicing, maintenance is all covered within the scheme.”
