Meet the Alpine A390: electric performance meets everyday practicality

The Alpine A390 is a five-seat electric sport fastback that brings together performance, everyday practicality and plenty of personality. Alpine might be best known for lightweight sports cars like the A110, but the A390 takes the French performance brand in a new direction. It’s bigger, more practical and fully electric, with space for five and the versatility to take on everything from the daily commute and school run to longer weekends away.

There’s plenty going on underneath too. With three electric motors, all-wheel drive and a choice of GT or GTS versions, the A390 pairs serious performance with an official WLTP range of up to 345 miles. So, while it might be the more practical Alpine, it certainly hasn’t forgotten how to have fun.

And while we’re talking Alpine, how do you actually pronounce it? If you’ve been saying, ‘Al-pine’, you’re definitely not the only one. Thanks to those French roots, it’s actually pronounced as ‘Al-peen’. A handy one to know next time it comes up in conversation!

What’s the Alpine A390?

The A390 is Alpine’s second all-electric model, following the smaller A290 hot hatch.

At 4.6 metres long, it’s a much bigger proposition. There are five seats, four doors and a fastback design, giving the A390 the versatility to tackle everything from the weekday commute to longer family journeys.

But Alpine hasn’t forgotten what it’s known for.

Every A390 uses three electric motors – one at the front and two at the rear – giving it all-wheel drive. Alpine has also developed its Active Torque Vectoring system, which can adjust how power is delivered between the wheels to help make the car feel agile and responsive.

So, while practicality matters, this is still very much an Alpine.

How far can the Alpine A390 travel?

The Alpine A390 GT has an 89kWh usable battery and offers an official WLTP range of up to 345 miles (555km).

That gives the A390 plenty of flexibility for drivers covering longer distances as well as everyday journeys.

When you do need to stop, rapid charging helps get you moving again. Depending on the version, the A390 can support DC charging at up to 190kW, with Alpine quoting a 15–80% charge in less than 25 minutes on the GTS under suitable conditions.

For everyday charging, plugging in at home overnight could mean starting the following morning with the charge you need without having to make a separate stop.

Is the Alpine A390 fast?

Very.

The Alpine A390 GT produces 400hp and reaches 0–62mph in around 4.8 seconds, while the A390 GTS produces 470hp and does it in around 3.9 seconds.

The A390 might have space for five, but its performance figures are firmly in sports car territory.

Of course, performance isn’t just about acceleration. Alpine has put plenty of focus into the way the A390 handles, with its all-wheel-drive system and Active Torque Vectoring designed to make the car feel responsive through corners as well as secure during everyday driving.

What’s the Alpine A390 like inside?

The sporty theme continues inside, but there’s plenty of technology and comfort for day-to-day driving too.

Depending on the version, you’ll find features including heated electrically adjustable sports seats, a steering wheel inspired by Formula 1, customisable ambient lighting and a 13-speaker Devialet audio system.

There’s also a 12-inch connected display with Google services built in, putting features such as navigation and apps within easy reach.

And unlike Alpine’s two-seat A110, the A390 has been designed from the start as a genuine five-seater. That makes it a much more realistic option if you need one car to cover commuting, family life and longer journeys – but still want something with a strong performance focus.

There are two main versions of the Alpine A390.

Exact specifications, equipment and range can vary by version, wheel size and configuration, so it’s always worth checking the individual car when you quote.
