An EV home charger does exactly what it says – it charges your car at home. It’s not essential, but it’s the most convenient option for a lot of people – you can treat it like charging your phone – just top it up when you’re asleep and not using it. Home EV chargers range from 3 kW to 22 kW, with higher power ratings delivering faster charging.

Costs can vary, depending on whether you have a home charger installed, and what speed you’re able to have. Most home chargers are 7kWh and average charging costs on an EV tariff charging overnight in the UK are around 7p to 9p/kWh so it will cost around £4 to £8 to “fill up”.
Most homes with off-street parking can have an EV charger installed without planning permission. Only certain protected properties require additional approval.

Smart chargers let you charge your EV at cheaper off‑peak electricity rates, often cutting the cost per kWh by half and reducing overall running costs. Some models, including those from Ohme, can be set to charge automatically when prices fall below a chosen level or when renewable energy supply is high, helping you charge more efficiently.
